What We Believe

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a "movement for wholeness in a fragmented world." We strive for a Christian faith that is both socially relevant to our time and intellectually sound, while holding true to Jesus' teachings that God loves each and every one of us unconditionally. We believe that the spiritual journey is an unpredictable one. Sometimes we feel sure, other times our doubt is as strong as our faith. We consider that ebb and flow to be part of the journey. We gather in community to support and be supported by one another as we discover what God calls us to be and do.

This congregation has declared itself to be an Opening and Affirming Church.  This community welcomes you no matter who you are or where you are on your faith journey. We look forward to meeting you!

Core Beliefs

  • Communion: the Lord's Supper, or Communion is celebrated weekly in worship.  It is open to all---seeker, doubter, believer alike.

  • Freedom of belief: We are called to follow the teachings of Jesus as God's Son.  All of us are free to follow our consciences guided by Scripture, the Holy Spirit, study and prayer; and we extend that freedom to others, respecting that people find their way to God by many different paths.

  • Baptism: Immersion in the waters of baptism is an outward sign of God's grace in our lives and our response to that grace.  While we practice immersion, other baptism traditions are honored and respected.

  • The Ministry of Believers: God calls us all---ministers and members of the church---to lead in worship, to serve, and to grow spiritually into the gifts God has given us.

Open and Affirming Statement

North Chevy Chase Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), committed to connecting our faith to community, and believing that “Love does no wrong to neighbor” (Romans 10), declare ourselves a spiritual sanctuary from the fear, rejection, hate and violence of a world that judges and condemns people for being who God has created them to be.

We proclaim God’s inclusive welcome to the Communion Table and welcome into full membership, participation, and leadership persons of every color and ethnicity, language, culture, nationality, age, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and expression, physical and mental ability, economic status, familial status, and spiritual background. We also recognize that people find God in many ways, and we seek to support and affirm them in their spiritual journeys.  We ask only that each person be accorded the honor, respect, and dignity due a beloved child of God.

Following the example of God’s beloved son, Jesus, we hereby declare ourselves to be an Open and Affirming church.
